About Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS)

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is an infectious disease caused by a new type of coronavirus that was first reported in 2012.
Cases continue to be reported, primarily from persons who have resided or traveled to the Middle East, or who have been in contact with MERS cases. In May 2015, MERS patients were also confirmed in South Korea. Be careful when traveling to affected countries. For more information, please see Related Information below.
To date, there have been no cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in Japan.
