About pediatric vaccination (1st and 2nd vaccination)

Featured information

When considering pediatric vaccination

On September 6, the Ordinance for Enforcement of the Preventive Vaccination Law was revised, and an obligation to make efforts was applied to pediatric vaccinations.

As certain scientific findings have been obtained regarding vaccination of children under the Omicron strain epidemic, it was deemed appropriate to apply the mandatory effort provision to children as well. However, the vaccination is not compulsory, and there is no change in receiving it based on the judgment of the person or guardian.

effects and side effects

According to the materials of the national council held on December 23, 2021, regarding the effect of Pfizer's vaccine for children, as an overseas example, prevention of onset after 7 days after the second vaccination Effectiveness is reported to be 90.7%.

* Data before the emergence of the Omicron strain.

In addition, regarding the new coronavirus vaccination, in view of the purpose of implementing it for emergency prevention of the spread of new coronavirus infectious disease, the provisions of "recommendation of vaccination" and "obligation to make efforts" under the Preventive Vaccination Act are applied. It is supposed to be, but, about vaccination to infant,

  1. The infection status of the Omicron strain in children (infected persons, trends in severity, etc.) is not yet definitive (it is on the rise).
  2. Regarding the Omicron strain, there is not necessarily enough evidence regarding its efficacy in preventing the onset and severity of disease in children (current findings are those prior to the emergence of the Omicron strain).

Based on this, at this time, the "obligation to make efforts (*must make efforts to receive vaccinations)" under the Preventive Vaccination Act does not apply to vaccination of children. It is said that it is appropriate to discuss this matter in a council of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

●The most common symptom that appeared within a few days after receiving the vaccine was pain at the injection site. Many people feel more pain the night and day after receiving the injection than immediately after receiving it.

Feeling tired and fever occurred more after the second treatment than the first treatment, and fever of 38 degrees or higher was 2.5% for the first treatment and 6.5% for the second treatment.

Symptoms after receiving the vaccine are mostly mild or moderate, and based on the information available at this time, it has been determined that there are no major safety concerns.
