stomach cancer screening

Stomach cancer screening is carried out with the aim of reducing deaths from stomach cancer.

The target audience varies depending on the examination method. Gastroscopy (gastroscopy) is for those aged 50 or older with even numbers , and gastric X-ray examination (examination with barium) is for those aged 35 or older . Approximately one month or more before the month of birth, the city will mail a "Notice of Cancer Screening" to eligible persons. Please see the cancer screening information page for information on how to apply.

In addition, if you receive a "required detailed examination" in the medical examination, be sure to undergo a detailed examination.

What is stomach cancer

Endoscope barium imaging Stomach cancer forms in the cells of the innermost mucous membrane of the stomach wall. Cancer cells in the mucous membrane are divided into “early cancer”, which remains in the stomach mucosa, and “advanced cancer,” which has progressed deeper than the muscle layer. Subjective symptoms may not appear at all even if the cancer progresses, or stomach pain, heartburn, and black stools may be seen from an early stage.
If you have any of these symptoms, don't wait for a check-up and seek medical attention.

Types of stomach cancer screening

There are two types of gastric cancer screening: gastroscopy (gastric camera) and gastric X-ray examination (barium examination). In both cases, the test will be performed after restricting food from the day before.

Stomach X-ray examination (examination with barium) is available free of charge from the age of 35. Gastroscopy (gastroscopy) can be performed at a copayment of 1,000 yen from 50 years of age to even-numbered years. You cannot receive a gastric X-ray examination (examination with barium) in the year you received a gastroscopy (gastroscope).

Contents of gastric cancer endoscopy (gastroscope)

Gastroscopy (gastroscopy) is for even-numbered people aged 50 and over. You can receive it at a designated medical institution in the city for a copayment of 1,000 yen. After the interview, we will conduct an inspection.

interview

We will ask you about the diseases you are currently undergoing treatment, whether you have any subjective symptoms, diseases you have had in the past, surgeries, family history (whether or not you have a blood relative who has had cancer), etc.

Gastroscopy (gastroscopy)

This is a test in which a long, thin tube (scope) is inserted through the mouth (oral) or nose (transnasal) to directly observe the mucous membrane of the stomach. If a suspicious area is found during the examination, a biopsy (removal of tissue) may be performed immediately.

Contents of gastric cancer X-ray examination (barium)

Stomach X-ray examination (examination with barium) is for those aged 35 and over. The examination is carried out at the Cancer Prevention and Health Promotion Center.

interview

We will ask you about the diseases you are currently undergoing treatment, whether you have any subjective symptoms, diseases you have had in the past, surgeries, family history (whether or not you have a blood relative who has had cancer), etc.

Stomach X-ray examination

In this test, an effervescent agent that expands the stomach and barium (contrast agent) are swallowed, and X-rays are taken while the body is moved on an X-ray table to observe the mucous membrane inside the stomach.

Flow of gastric cancer X-ray examination (barium)

1.Before inspection

If you are going to the hospital or taking medication, please be sure to obtain confirmation from your doctor beforehand whether it is okay to take a stomach X-ray. (Some people get sick after being tested without taking medicine or water.)

2. The day before

For dinner, please eat something easy to digest by 9:00 pm. Drinking water is fine.

3.On the day

  • Do not eat. (Tobacco, gum, etc. are also not allowed.)
  • You may drink 200ml (1 cup) of water or hot water from the time you wake up until 2 hours before the start of the examination.
  • If you have heart disease or high blood pressure, please consult your doctor in advance and take this medicine at least 3 hours before your examination. Please take other medicines after the examination. (If the systolic blood pressure is 180 or the diastolic blood pressure is 110 or higher on the day, it may cause complications and cannot be tested.)
  • If you have diabetes, do not take any medicines or inject insulin before the examination.
  • You can wear undergarments that do not have buttons, metal fittings, or plastic under your examination clothes. Please come in clothes that are easy to change. Please remove accessories.

4. After inspection

  • Drink more water than usual on a regular basis.
  • Alcohol is a diuretic, so please refrain from it on the day.
  • For several days after the examination, check the status of your bowel movements, and if barium is not excreted by the next day, promptly see a medical institution. (In rare cases, barium may cause constipation.)
  • Hypersensitivity (allergic symptoms) may occur as a side effect after taking Valium. If you experience symptoms such as hives, edema, or difficulty breathing, please seek medical attention immediately.

Those who are not suitable for gastric cancer X-ray examination (barium)

  • Those who are pregnant or may become pregnant
  • Those who weigh more than the weight limit of the examination table (130 kg or more)
  • Those who have a history of hypersensitivity (hives, shortness of breath, etc.) to barium preparations
  • Those who do not follow the precautions before the examination (fasting, etc.) It is also described in "Gastric cancer X-ray (barium) flow" on this page.
  • Those who have had colon polyps removed within the past 2 months
  • Those who have had intestinal obstruction within one year or those who have repeated intestinal obstruction
  • Those who are subject to fluid restriction due to kidney disease (artificial dialysis), etc.

  • Those who have undergone abdominal/head/thoracic surgery or orthopedic surgery within the past year (including caesarean section)
  • Those with constipation (such as those who have not had a bowel movement for 3 days or more on the day of the examination)
  • Those who have a systolic blood pressure of 180 mmHg or higher or a diastolic blood pressure of 110 mmHg or higher on the day of the examination
  • Those who have had aspiration (barium entering the trachea or lungs) during a medical checkup in the past
  • Those who cannot hold a barium cup and drink by themselves
  • Those who have difficulty in maintaining a standing position on their own or grasping the handrail of the imaging table
  • Those who have difficulty moving according to the instructions of the technician

*Those who have undergone gastric surgery are not suitable for this examination. A gastroscopy is recommended.
*If you are undergoing treatment or follow-up for stomach/duodenum, please consult your family medical institution.

When it comes to close inspection

Please undergo a detailed examination such as a gastroscopy at a medical institution. Diseases other than cancer (gastritis, ulcers, polyps, etc.) can also be found.
