Unlike domestic travel, traveling abroad puts a lot of stress on your body and mind due to time differences, temperature changes, climate differences, and long flights. In addition, depending on the destination country, there may be outbreaks of diseases that do not occur in Japan, and sometimes unexpected health problems may occur.
In advance, please check the outbreak status of infectious diseases in the country you are traveling to, inoculate preventive vaccines, and take measures to prevent infectious diseases at your destination.
before going on a trip
Check the information on infectious diseases at your destination in advance.
In order to avoid contracting infectious diseases overseas, it is important to acquire correct knowledge of infectious diseases and preventive measures. For more information, please see Preventing Infectious Diseases Overseas (link to an external site) .
You can check the latest epidemic status of infectious diseases at your travel destination from the quarantine station website (link to an external site) .
vaccination
There are two main purposes of vaccination.
One is because some countries (regions) require vaccinations when entering the country, and the other is to protect yourself from being infected with infectious diseases that are not found in Japan.
If you need a vaccination or proof of vaccination
Some countries and regions do not allow entry or transit without the presentation of a vaccination certificate. In addition, in the case of long-term stay such as study abroad, presentation of vaccination certificate may be required. Vaccination certificates include vaccination certificates and maternal and child health handbooks handed out after vaccination. For the required documents, please contact the embassy in Japan of the country you are traveling to or the destination of your study abroad.
In addition, Kita Ward certifies the vaccinations listed in the maternal and child health handbook under the name of the Mayor of Kita Ward (for a fee). If you need it, please contact us below.

to protect yourself from illness
In foreign countries, diseases that do not exist in Japan may be prevalent, and the risk of infection may be higher than in Japan.
Vaccinations can be given to prevent such diseases. These vaccines differ depending on the travel destination, travel period, and activities at the travel destination, so it is necessary to inoculate according to the situation.
Some vaccines require several doses (2-3 doses).
As soon as you decide to travel abroad (at least 3 months prior to departure), contact the immunization agency (link to an external site) or the vaccination counter at the quarantine station (link to an external site) Please consult about vaccination schedule.
Precautions while traveling
During your stay or travel, in addition to mental anxiety, the environment, such as temperature, humidity, and time, can change greatly, and you tend to get sick.
Please take good care of your physical condition during the trip and try to act with plenty of time to spare.
Diseases transmitted from food
Most food-borne diseases cause diarrhea, but there are also diseases such as hepatitis A where diarrhea is not the main symptom.
Be especially careful in tropical to subtropical areas and areas with poor sanitary conditions.
Prevention is to not eat raw food. Be careful with ice in drinks.
Diseases transmitted from insects
Insect bites not only cause itching, but also carry various diseases.
Avoid exposing your skin and use insect repellent.
Diseases transmitted from animals
Do not touch wild animals and do not carelessly pet dogs and cats.
If you do get bitten by one of these animals, seek immediate medical attention.
For rabies, vaccination is effective.
Diseases transmitted from humans
The main routes of transmission for human-to-human diseases are direct contact with blood and bodily fluids, and sexual intercourse.
Blood-borne diseases are easily transmitted when a single syringe is used by several people. With the feeling of liberation from overseas travel, never try to get your hands on drugs abroad. Avoid contact with other people's blood in any way.
Among sexually transmitted diseases, HIV infection is prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, Russia, Asia, and parts of Central and South America, and caution is warranted.
About skin diseases
In addition to insect repellent measures, do not walk or swim barefoot in rivers or lakes where safety cannot be confirmed.
the trip is over
The disease has an incubation period and does not develop symptoms immediately after infection.
There are many diseases with long incubation periods overseas, mainly in the tropics.
In the case of infectious diseases that do not normally exist in Japan, the diagnosis is delayed, and it can be life-threatening.
For about two months after returning from overseas travel, if you feel unwell, please consult a medical institution as soon as possible.
