pneumococcus
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a bacterium that is mainly contained in secretions of the respiratory tract, and it is transmitted by droplets through saliva, etc., and can cause serious complications such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and sepsis.
Pneumonia is the fifth leading cause of death in Japan.
Streptococcus pneumoniae is thought to be the cause of one-fourth to one-third of pneumonia in adults.

From April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2023
Target audience
Those who will be 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, and 100 years old in each fiscal year will be eligible. (Those aged 101 and over were also eligible for 2019 only.)
Notes
- Those who have received routine vaccinations or subsidies from Meguro Ward in the past are not eligible, so the screening slip will not be mailed.
- Please note that even if you have received the vaccination questionnaire this time, you will not be eligible if you have previously been vaccinated with the 23-valent pneumococcal capsular polysaccharide vaccine at your own expense.
- Those who have received a 23-valent pneumococcal vaccine (generic name: 23-valent pneumococcal capsular polysaccharide vaccine, product name Pneumovax NP) in the past with subsidies from the ward or at their own expense are not eligible for vaccination subsidies. Those who wish to be vaccinated again will be vaccinated at their own expense.
- If you have been vaccinated with Prevenar 13 (adsorbed 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine) in the past, you can receive Pneumovax NP (23-valent pneumococcal capsular polysaccharide vaccine) as a routine vaccination.

Expenses (self-pay amount)
If you use the sent pre-examination slip and inoculate within the period, it is free.
However, you will be charged a fee if you are vaccinated outside the designated medical institution or if you are vaccinated outside the designated period.
In addition, welfare recipients and recipients of support benefits for Japanese remaining in China are exempted from the cost.

pneumococcal vaccine
The pneumococcal vaccine is a vaccine that prevents infection with pneumococcus, which is the most common cause of pneumonia in the elderly. In addition, there is effect to prevent aggravation by inoculating. However, pneumococci are not the only cause of pneumonia, so not all pneumonia can be prevented.
side reaction
Side effects such as swelling at the injection site, pain, and sometimes mild fever may occur after vaccination, but they are not so severe as to interfere with daily life. It usually disappears in about 2 days. If you have a high fever, changes in your physical condition, or other worrisome symptoms, please consult a medical institution.

- We can inoculate at contract medical institution in 23 wards .
- For contracted medical institutions in Meguro Ward, please refer to the "List of Medical Institutions Performing Pneumococcal Vaccinations for the Elderly" enclosed with the pre-examination form. For contracted medical institutions in 22 wards other than Meguro Ward, please contact the relevant ward or medical institution directly.
- Meguro Ward will not subsidize vaccinations outside of contracted medical institutions in the 23 wards. Please ask the local government where you wish to inoculate about the presence or absence of subsidies. In addition, regardless of whether or not the local government in which you wish to receive vaccinations subsidizes the vaccination, you may need a vaccination request form from Meguro Ward.
