What is Rubella?

Currently, the number of rubella patients in Tokyo is increasing, and there is concern that the infection will spread, mainly among those who have not been vaccinated.
In the past, from 2012 to 2013, rubella was prevalent nationwide, and there were many outbreaks in adults, and there were also reports of infants with " congenital rubella syndrome ".
Rubella, also known as "three-day measles," is caused by a viral infection. The incubation period is 2 to 3 weeks, and it begins with mild cold symptoms, and the main symptoms include fever, rash, and swollen cervical lymph nodes (both sides of the neck). Symptoms similar to measles appear, but heal in about 3 to 4 days. Complications include thrombocytopenic purpura and encephalitis, which can become severe in adults.
If a pregnant woman is infected with rubella early in pregnancy, the fetus will also be infected, and there is a high possibility that she will be born with " congenital rubella syndrome (deafness, congenital heart disease, cataracts, etc.)". To prevent infection, it is effective to get vaccinated before pregnancy.

About congenital rubella syndrome

If a pregnant woman, especially a woman in the early stages of pregnancy, catches rubella, the fetus may be infected with the rubella virus, and the baby may be born with disabilities such as deafness, heart disease, cataracts, and mental and physical development delays. These disorders are called "congenital rubella syndrome".
Babies with "congenital rubella syndrome" may not necessarily have all of the above disorders, so it may take time for people around them to notice.
The possibility of "congenital rubella syndrome" is different depending on the pregnancy period when rubella was caught.
The odds are particularly high during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, with studies ranging from 25% to 90%.
By getting vaccinated, adult women can be prevented from contracting rubella during pregnancy, and non-pregnant women can be prevented from transmitting rubella to pregnant women, etc. cannot. )
Pregnant women and their families should go to a medical institution to check their immunity against rubella (antibody test) and get vaccinated.
