AIDS stands for "acquired immunodeficiency syndrome" in Japanese and is a disease caused by infection with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). When infected, the immune function that protects the body from illness is destroyed, the body's resistance decreases, and it becomes easy to be infected by weak pathogens that do not cause illness when healthy (opportunistic infection).
Symptoms do not appear immediately after being infected with HIV, and there are almost no subjective symptoms. Therefore, unless tested, an infected person may not know they have HIV and may pass it on to others.
About prevention methods
There are three main routes of infection:
- Sexual contact: such as unprotected sex
- Blood infections: Contact of blood with wounds or mucous membranes, shared use of needles, etc.
- Mother-to-child transmission: during childbirth, during breastfeeding
It is not transmitted through saliva, sweat, tears, pets, or insects such as mosquitoes.
In everyday life, you will not be infected except through sexual intercourse. Therefore, proper use of condoms is the most effective prevention.
About treatment
HIV infection became a treatable chronic infection after the advent of multidrug therapy, in which several types of drugs are combined, to maintain immune function. . Current treatments can prevent opportunistic infections, but none of the drugs can completely eliminate HIV from an infected person's body. The drug must be taken for the rest of your life.
About HIV testing
The public health center provides tests (blood tests) free of charge, anonymously, and by appointment.
If you wish, you can take a syphilis test (blood test) and a chlamydia test (urine test) at the same time.
