Precautions after BCG vaccination

Do not touch or put clothing on the BCG vaccination site until it dries naturally.

  1. After the vaccination, you may take a bath as long as the vaccination site has been thoroughly dried, but do not rub or scratch the vaccination site.
  2. Approximately 10 days after vaccination, red, spotty swelling may occur, and small pus may form in some areas. The symptoms are most intense 4 weeks after vaccination, but after that they become scabs, and after 3 to 4 months the scabs fall off and clear up. Do not rub or scratch when there are red bumps.
  3. As a side reaction, the lymph nodes under the armpit on the inoculated side may rarely swell. Normally, you can leave it alone and see how it goes, but sometimes it may swell, swell up, or in rare cases, suppurate and spontaneously burst and bleed. In such cases, please consult your doctor.
  4. If your child has tuberculosis, the above reactions may occur if BCG is given within 10 days after the vaccination. This is called the Koch phenomenon. If you have a reaction that seems to be Koch's phenomenon, please contact the medical institution where you received the vaccination.
  5. Physicians who have diagnosed (suspected) Koch phenomenon should report to the ward with the consent of their guardians using the "Report of Suspected Koch Phenomenon". Also, please take a tuberculin reaction test and report the results to the ward using the "Koch Phenomenon Case Report".
